Hello Background Bits

Glossy paper and dye ink are a marriage made in crafters' heaven! So many techniques are possible and the ink just glows!

Having said that, the colours on this particular card look a little muted and that's because this is what I call a third generation card. It probably has a technical name but that works for me! When I get messy with anything (inks, embossing paste, glitter etc) I tend to make the most of the mess and create several pieces. This was one of the last pieces for the day and the colours had become muted and greyed through mixing.... but I still liked it. In days to come I'll show you the other pieces I made that afternoon.

Inky background on Glossy White Cardstock stamped with Basic Black Archival Ink

Again, I'm sure the technique for the background has a technical name but, since I don't know it, I'll simply describe the process I used.

Using three different ink pads (in this case Elegant Eggplant, Bermuda Bay and Crushed Curry) I patted ink onto a waterproof craft mat.
I then spritzed the ink with water until it had formed quite large beads.
I pre-cut my Glossy White Cardstock to size and then pressed it into the ink on the mat.
I then lifted it up, let it run a little and used a tissue (a clean one of course!) to soak up any excess ink at the edge of the cardstock.
Since I'm somewhat impatient, I used my heat tool to dry the piece.

Tip:
Don't worry if the cardstock curls a bit. Application of some heat to the back of the piece may help or simply put it under heavy book for a short while. If a little bit of curl remains, it will sit flat once it has been adhered to another piece of card.

I used Basic Black Archival ink to stamp elements from the Background Bits stamp set and the greeting from the Hello Friend stamp set.

Having used my heat tool again to ensure that the black ink was dry, I sponged a line of Bermuda Bay ink across the pattern at the bottom of the card to provide a little bit of a ribbon effect.

Having added my Crushed Curry and Elegant Eggplant layers I added the piece to the front of the Bermuda Bay card and added some Enamel Shapes to the centres of the pattern. They are in fact Pear Pizzazz but they look more yellow in the photo.

For the "thinking of you" panel, I lightly sponged a small strip of Glossy White Cardstock with Bermuda Bay before stamping the greeting (from the Colorful Seasons stamp set) using Basic Black Archival ink and adding some Elegant Eggplant Enamel Shapes.

Slimey Hugs Monster

This was one of the cards resulting from my batch of inky backgrounds production the other day - it will be a birthday card for one of my little great nephews.

I don't really love the colour green but it does seem suitable for this cute little monster

Having cut my piece of Shimmery White cardstock to size, I silver heat embossed the cute little monster from the Yummy in My Tummy stamp set.

I then used the plastic bag smoosh method of creating an inky background (wet cardstock, pat ink onto a plastic bag, smoosh plastic bag onto wet cardstock) using Crushed Curry and Basic Gray with a final light dab of Basic Gray. Embossing the monster first helped me to avoid adding too much colour to his body area.

Once the background was dry, I used an aquapainter and green ink (Cucumber Crush and Emerald Envy) to colour the monster. I was happy for the yellow background to show through to add a bit more interest to his body. I used some Whisper White Craft ink for his eyes.

When the ink was completely dry, I carefully added glue from the Fine Tip Glue pen all over the monster to make him shiny and slimey looking. My inspiration for this came from Sara Douglass who added colour to the glue in the Fine Tip Glue applicator - I just didn't want to contaminate my glue for one card. I left it overnight to dry.

Despite my best endeavours, some of the green from the monster had seeped beyond his outline, so I gave him a shadow of Basic Gray, using the aqua painter and some ink.

Having layered up the card, I added the Hugs button which I made with layers of Whisper White, Basic Gray and Crushed Curry cardstock and the Layering Circles and Stitched Shapes framelits.

Lifting Me Up Tag Pull

I love this bundle and decided I wanted to help it live up to its name. So this balloon lifts up.

It took me all afternoon to work out how to accomplish my goal but it was worth it because I'm very happy with the result!

As the tag is pulled up to reveal the greeting, the balloon rises too

I'm not normally big on planning, so this was a bit of a departure for me! The first thing I did was to work out my sizes and plan my layers.

The mechanism prevents the tag pulling out further or the balloon rising more

Then I took a scrap piece of watercolour paper and used, more or less, the smooching method to apply Crushed Curry and Tangerine Tango inks. I did this twice, drying the piece off with a heat tool in between. While the second coat was wet, I picked up a little Real Red ink with a damp brush and dabbled it on so that it blended a bit.

While the watercolour was drying, I cut my layers and the pieces for the mechanism which comprises the front "pocket" with the slit cut into it, a tag and a little piece of window sheet (cut and bent as per the photo below).

I cut my pocket from Carried Away Designer Series Paper (free during Sale-A-Bration with a $90 purchase). The size is 4" wide by 5.5" long. I scored each of the sides at 1/2" and made a cut in the centre from 1 3/8" from the top down to 3 7/8" from the top. I also cut half a circle from the top centre using a 3/4" circle punch.

The tag is just a fraction smaller and I cut it from Mint Macaron cardstock. I cut a 3/4" circle of Smoky Slate cardstock, folded it in half and then glued it over the centre of one end to form the tag pull.

I attached the lower flaps of window sheet to the tag and the upper ones to the balloon

I cut a small piece of window sheet and cut and bent it to the above shape to attached the balloon. The lower two flaps I glued to the tag. I then pushed the window sheet up through the slit from the back and bent the upper two tags into shape before using glue dots to adhere them to the finished balloon. when the tag is pulled, the small straight piece of window sheet slides up the slit in the pocket.
To finish the mechanism, I folded back the 1/2" flaps on either side of the pocket piece, added Fast Fuse adhesive and then adhered the pocket to the top of the card.

There is depth to the card between the lifting mechanism and the Stampin' Dimensionals

I cut the clouds from Whisper White cardstock and sponged around the edges with Smoky Slate ink, adding more ink to the bottom of the cloud. These are adhered to the card with Stampin' Dimensions. The tiny cloud is sitting in front of the top cloud, so I used a double layer of dimensionals.

The balloon is very simple. I cut the outline from Basic Gray cardstock with the Up & Away Framelit and then glued it to the piece of watercolour paper. Once the adhesive was dry, I trimmed away the excess watercolour paper, including the little piece between the basket and the balloon, which I trimmed away with a craft knife.

I've kept my card relatively small because I wanted to used the Thick Whisper White card for the card base. These are the sizes I used:

Card base: 6" x 7" scored and folded at 3.5"
Basic Gray: 3 3/8" x 5 7/8"
Mint Macaron: 3.25" x 5.75"
