Love to Travel

Instead of our usual Crazy Crafters Team Project Highlight, the amazing Kylie Bertucci is running an international project highlight this week with the theme: Love.  

Many very talented people are taking part, so it's well worth the visit here.  From 6.30pm AEST on 8 April, for a week, you'll also be able to vote for your favourite projects.

It just so happens that my wonderful husband has earned LOTS of brownie points recently, so I decided to make a special card for him.

You may be asking, "What did he do that was so special?"  He has made it possible for me to travel back to England to attend the memorial service of someone special to me and also to visit friends and relatives that I haven't seen for a while - something I hadn't thought I would be able to do and that will mean so much to me.  He's not only an amazing husband but also a wonderful human being and it's nice to be able to celebrate that. 

It seemed appropriate to use the Traveler stamp set and I've made a Peak A Boo card.

If you look carefully at the world map in the bottom right corner of the card, you may be able to see that I've highlighted England and drawn a rough route from Sydney to London!

As you open the card, the map is replaced by some mushy but heartfelt words!

To make the card base I used the video tutorial by Norma Lee at Splitcoaststampers but made a couple of adjustments.

I used the Brushstrokes background stamp to make the striped background with Blackberry Bliss ink on Sahara Sand cardstock.

I stamped images from Traveler and The Open Sea in Basic Black onto Whisper White cardstock, watercoloured them and cut them out with one of the dies from the Squares Collection Framelits.

The Peak A Boo greeting is from the Going Global set and I added decorations from That Thing You Did and a couple of hearts using a tiny little stamp in the First Sight set.

The other greeting is from Timeless Love.  After stamping the greeting in Basic Black onto Whisper White card, I cut it out with one of the Lots of Labels framelits and used the next size up framelit to cut a mat for it from Blackberry Bliss cardstock.

I used the Sweetheart punch to cut hearts from Blackberry Bliss and Rose Red cardstock and added a smaller Pink Pirouette heart cut with one of the Itty Bitty Accents punches.  I added a heart-shaped sequin from the Brights Sequin Assortment.

Once the card is fully open, it looks like this.

I stamped the compass from The Open Sea twice in Basic Black ink onto Whisper White card and punched them out using the 1.25" circle punch.  Then I sponged them with Smoky Slate, followed by a little Basic Gray and finally just a hint of Basic Black on the edge.  I watercoloured them in parts with Rich Razzleberry ink and then adhered them with Dimensionals.

How I made it:

• I cut two pieces of Blackberry Bliss cardstock to 5.5" x 8.5"
• One of these I scored in half at 4.25"
• The other piece, I scored at 5.5"
• I adhered the patterned card to these pieces, following the same method as Norma
• I positioned the square die (with the blade up against the edge of the folded over card, just as Norma does) in the lower right quadrant.
• Then I followed the same method as Norma to line up and cut windows in the remaining layers.
• I made three frames from Blackberry Bliss card and glued them into position.
• I cut the  three Blackberry Bliss mats for the front of the card using the larger of the dies I had used to create the frames.
• I cut a piece of Blackberry Bliss cardstock to 5.5" x 5.75" and scored at 5.5" and adhered it to the back of the card (just like Norma).

The finished card is 5.5" square.

A Dutch Open Sea

I recently discovered a fun fold that I hadn't seen before so I had to try it!  It's called a Double Dutch fold and there's a great tutorial for it at Splitcoaststampers.

I needed a masculine card so I combined elements from The Open Sea and Going Global stamp sets with nautical colours - Marina Mist and Pacific Point.

The anchors are coloured with Smoky Slate and Soft Suede markers

For the tag, I used the largest die in the Tags & Labels Framelit set and the second largest of the Lots of Labels Framelits.  The image is coloured with Pacific Point and Marina Mist markers.Everything is sponged with Marina Mist ink. 

The greeting is from Watercolour Wings, stamped in Basic Black and cut out with the banner die from the Large Numbers Framelits.  I sponged the banner with Marina Mist and Pacific Point inks.

The background piece is stamped with elements from The Open Sea using Marina Mist ink and then sponged over with Marina Mist ink.

The mostly blank top panel provides a place to write a note or greeting.

The mountains in the background are from the In the Meadow stamp set, as are the sprigs of grass in the foreground.

The hilly cliff edge in the foreground was created with one of the stamps in the Happy Home set - I used a Pear Pizzazz marker to ink up only the hill, omitting the bench and clouds.

The ship is from The Open Sea.  I used a black marker to ink up the ship, leaving out the sea part of the stamp.

I sponged the grass with Pear Pizzazz and Mossy Meadow.  The  sea and sky are sponged with Soft Sky, Marina Mist and Pacific Point and I used a Marina Mist Stampin' Write marker to create ripples in the sea.

I sponged the distant mountains with Wisteria Wonder and a little Elegant Eggplant and deepened the shadows on the waterline with an Elegant Eggplant marker.  Then I added a little Wisteria Wonder into the sea as a bit of a reflection.  

At the end, I touched up the sails with a bit of Whisper White Craft Ink and a brush and used a Real Red marker on the little flag at the top of mast.

Number of Years - 40th Birthday card

I wanted to make a special card to celebrate my nephew's 40th birthday (how can that even be possible?!!). so I turned to Number of Years and Going Places.

I cut Sahara Sand cardstock to 12" x 6" and then scored and folded the long side at 4" and 8" to create a triple flap card (perhaps it has a proper name?).

The numbers and stamps are from the Number of Years bundle.

The front of card has the restrained, masculine look to it that I was looking for and it's mostly about the gorgeous Designer Series Paper - Going Places.

No, my nephew isn't an alien!  I distorted the photo since I haven't asked permission to show his image.

As the card open, it gets more interesting.  The photo I found of my nephew was taken on a boat, so the nautical papers in the DSP were a perfect match.  I was tempted to leave the side panels unstamped but eventually added "Hello birthday boy" from the Sale-A-Bration set Hello.

The birthday greeting is from the fabulous Happy Birthday Everyone set

I balanced things out a bit with the compass design from the Going Global stamp set.

The colours are: Sahara Sand, Lost Lagoon and black.
