A Dutch Open Sea

I recently discovered a fun fold that I hadn't seen before so I had to try it!  It's called a Double Dutch fold and there's a great tutorial for it at Splitcoaststampers.

I needed a masculine card so I combined elements from The Open Sea and Going Global stamp sets with nautical colours - Marina Mist and Pacific Point.

The anchors are coloured with Smoky Slate and Soft Suede markers

For the tag, I used the largest die in the Tags & Labels Framelit set and the second largest of the Lots of Labels Framelits.  The image is coloured with Pacific Point and Marina Mist markers.Everything is sponged with Marina Mist ink. 

The greeting is from Watercolour Wings, stamped in Basic Black and cut out with the banner die from the Large Numbers Framelits.  I sponged the banner with Marina Mist and Pacific Point inks.

The background piece is stamped with elements from The Open Sea using Marina Mist ink and then sponged over with Marina Mist ink.

The mostly blank top panel provides a place to write a note or greeting.

The mountains in the background are from the In the Meadow stamp set, as are the sprigs of grass in the foreground.

The hilly cliff edge in the foreground was created with one of the stamps in the Happy Home set - I used a Pear Pizzazz marker to ink up only the hill, omitting the bench and clouds.

The ship is from The Open Sea.  I used a black marker to ink up the ship, leaving out the sea part of the stamp.

I sponged the grass with Pear Pizzazz and Mossy Meadow.  The  sea and sky are sponged with Soft Sky, Marina Mist and Pacific Point and I used a Marina Mist Stampin' Write marker to create ripples in the sea.

I sponged the distant mountains with Wisteria Wonder and a little Elegant Eggplant and deepened the shadows on the waterline with an Elegant Eggplant marker.  Then I added a little Wisteria Wonder into the sea as a bit of a reflection.  

At the end, I touched up the sails with a bit of Whisper White Craft Ink and a brush and used a Real Red marker on the little flag at the top of mast.

Black & White coastal scene with lighthouse

A precious cargo is guided into the safe haven at the end of its journey

I've struggled over whether to share this one or not.  Eventually, though, I came to the conclusion that when we share our projects via our blog posts, we are also sharing a little something of ourselves and our lives.  And life isn't always flowers and sunshine, unfortunately.

Today (as I write this), I received the news that someone very dear to me has taken her last breath.  This card is for her family.

For me, this picture represents a precious cargo being guided into a safe haven at the end of its journey.

Tips & tricks:

• I stamped the lighthouse & ship with black into onto Very Vanilla cardstock & masked them.
• I tore a piece of scrap paper to produce something like a cliff edge and used it as a mask while I sponged with black ink.  I used Mememto Tuxedo Black as I think it's a bit of a softer, warmer black.
• I tore another piece of scrap paper to create a mask for the mountains and used a straight edge of paper to mask the sea while I sponged the mountains with black ink.
• I then, very lightly, sponged black onto the sky area, using the straight edge of a scrap of paper as a mask to create the beam of light from the lighthouse.
• I reversed my "mountain" mask and sponged the mountain reflection into the sea area.
• Then I lightly sponged all of the sea area.
• The ship stamp has built in waves which I needed to incorporate into my scene somehow.  So I used a small brush and watercoloured in swirls of black ink until it seemed blended enough.
• I removed the masks from the lighthouse & ship and gave them a very light touch of black ink to reduce the stark contrast a little.
• I used the grass stamp from In the meadow to stamp with black in the foreground.

Peaceful country scene with dog - The Wilderness Awaits

Today I made a birthday card for a friend of mine who loves dogs.  It gave me the opportunity to ink up an image I hadn't previously used in the The Wilderness Awaits stamp set.

He seems to be a good hunting dog, so I thought I'd better add some trees.  It's always a joy to use Lovely As A Tree (one of my all time favourite stamp sets!) and I added Sheltering Tree.  I decided to add some autumnal colours to the trees.

Without getting too bogged down in detail, this is an overview of my plan.

1. Stamped the dog with black ink and masked it.
2. Stamped Lovely as a Tree in Basic Grey ink (to put them in the distance a bit)
3. Sponged the sky with Soft Sky and then the top part with some Marina Mist.
4. Sponged the grass with Pear Pizzazz.
5. Stamped Sheltering tree trunk in black (to make it dark to bring it forward)
6. Stamped the grass from In The Meadow in Pear Pizzazz in the foreground
7. Stamped the same grass over the rest of the grass area in Pear Pizzazz but stamping off first.
8. Stamped the grass under the dog and tree and in the foreground with Mossy Meadow
9. Used the small leaves image from Sheltering tree to add leaves to the small trees in Pear Pizzazz, Crushed Curry and Cajun Craze.
10. Stamped the tree leaves image from Sheltering Tree on the big tree in Pear Pizzazz,  Added some Crushed Curry and Cajun Craze with the small leaves image.
11. Went over the right side of the big tree trunk with an aqua pen and a little Cajun Craze.
12. Added some watercolour Pear Pizzazz to all the trees
13. Unmasked the dog
14. Added some watercolour Mossy Meadow under the dog and trees.
15. Watercoloured the dog with Delightful Dijon
16. Added Cajun Craze to the dog, working in layers a bit at a time to create highlights and shadows.
17. Sponged a little bit of Mossy Meadow to the lower edge of the panel.
18. Stamped the sentiment from Sheltering Tree to the shadows.

The painted panel is layered onto Basic Black cardstock and then onto the Cajun Craze card.
