Lovely As A Tree - Masking & Sponging

I will always love trying new products and learning new techniques but from time to time I find it comforting and grounding to revisit oldies and favourites.

A masculine card made with comforting old favourites

This card encompasses both an old and favourite stamp set as well as technique.

My very first Stampin' Up! stamp set was the perennial favourite - Lovely As A Tree and it remains one of my very favourite sets for its versatility and beautiful images.  It's the perfect set - all occasion, masculine or feminine, easily paired with other stamp sets, and did I say beautiful images! And, it's my go to stamp set for creating little scenes.

This time it's the star of the show combined with a little masking and sponging and a little piece of that gorgeous Cordury Ribbon.

Voila!  A masculine card in no time flat!

For this card, I used masking to combine images from four different stamps sets to create a little scene.  Can you recognise which ones?  You'll find the answer in the product images at the bottom of this post.

It's so much fun to combine stamp sets to create a little scene

The dog was the first image to be stamped, because it's in the foreground.  Having masked the dog, I stamped the lady and masked her too before stamping the trees.  All the images are stamped in Basic Black ink.

With the masks in place, I sponged the grass with Lemon Lime Twist, Garden Green and Tranquil Tide and the sky with Soft Sky inks, keeping the coverage light in the area where I planned to place a suggestion of the lady's legs.  I used a bristle brush to stipple the same greens into the trees.

At this point I removed the masks and watercoloured the lady with Cherry Cobbler and Powder Pink inks.  I mostly left the dog white but added a touch of Smoky Slate shading and Cherry Cobbler for the bow.

I partially inked the birds image with Basic Black ink and added them to the corner.

Around this time, I decided that the grass was too dark, so I used a damp piece of sea sponge and a tissue to lift off some of the ink.  This left some sponge marks that made me very unhappy but when I turned to my husband for comfort and support he simply said "Looks perfect to me - like the type of lawn one would expect to see in a normal park".  So I've left it perfect in its imperfection .... although.... the perfectionist in me is still a bit troubled!

The base card is Night of Navy to which I added a layer of Color Theory Designer Series Paper in the Crushed Curry crackle design.

This is Sandi's card that I have chosen to CASE.  I just love the Lift Me Up bundle, so I couldn't resist this card!  

I was also inspired by a lovely Christmas present from my Brother-in-Law: a gorgeous mug in black and white with the London skyline (I can even pick out the Gherkin!).  There's a tiny bit of red in the form of a telephone box - a detail that I love!

Attached to the handle of the mug was this great tag - and that made it even more special!

So, clearly, I was going to make a card with balloons in black and white with a touch of red! 

I decided to make a little scene with the tents from the Carousel Birthday stamp set and my all time favourite stamp set - Lovely As A Tree, which I stamped in Basic Gray to set it back a bit in the scene.

I stamped the balloons from the Lift Me Up stamp set and cut them out with the matching dies from the Up and Away Thinlits which I bought as the bundle and saved 10%.

To add dimension, the two black and white balloons are adhered with Stampin' Dimensionals

The greeting is also from the Carousel Birthday stamp set.  I used markers to ink up each line of the greeting separately in Basic Gray and Real Red.

Going through my Facebook feed today I saw a beautiful card made by a talented lady called Gwen Maghdour.  She had combined the stamp sets Star of Light and Lovely As a Tree and I thought "what a good idea!".

Sadly, I didn't capture the silver heat embossing very well

So this is my, night time, version.
