Painted Glass: Mango & Grape

This card caused me some trouble, mainly because I didn't plan in advance.  I started out with the centre vellum panel and then thought about what to do with it!

I originally made a base card from Highland Heather cardstock and changed my mind at the last minute.  So I was left with an unused Highland Heather card.  On Friday, I'll share what I did with it.

To make the frame around the centre panel, I "elongated" the square die in the Stained Glass Thinlits set.  It did require a little patience and fiddling.  

• I first cut a piece of Champagne Foil to size.
• I positioned the die at the top of the Foil strip, making sure to keep it straight.
• I positioned the top cutting plate in such a way that the lower horizontal pattern would not cut (See image 1 below)
• Next, I repositioned the die, ensuring that it lined up and that there would be sufficient overlap to continue cutting the vertical pattern (see image 3 below).
• I positioned the top cutting plate in such a way that the top horizontal pattern would not cut.
• I carefully rolled it through the Big Shot, being careful to stop before I reached the lower horizontal pattern.  It's not a very big die, so I didn't roll it far!
• I then repositioned for the last time - lining up the bottom of the die with the bottom of the Foil strip and making sure that vertical edges all lined up.
• I then repeated the cutting process, ensuring that the top horizontal pattern did not cut.
• I then found I needed to tidy up a few areas that had not cut properly with my craft knife.

I coloured the front of the vellum with Stampin' Blend alcohol markers and then used a paint brush to apply some Champagne Mist Shimmer Paint to the rest of the centre panel, leaving the edges unpainted.

I attached the vellum to a piece of Grapefruit Grove cardstock by sponging the back of the vellum with Multipurpose Liquid Glue.

The greeting (from the Hand Delivered stamp set) is heat embossed in silver onto a piece of Gorgeous Grape cardstock and cut out with one of the Bunch of Banners dies.  After cutting, I used some Frost White and Champagne Mist Shimmer Paints to add some definition to the banner.

Stained Glass Window card

I made this for a much-loved cousin who is struggling with serious ill-health and hospitalisation.  I thought the soothing colours and church window design would be uplifting for his spirits.

I coloured the piece of Graceful Glass Designer Vellum with a variety of Stampin' Blends alcohol markers - choosing to colour the front of the vellum for stronger, brighter colours.

Having adhered the vellum to a piece of Whisper White cardstock, I added it to the front of the card.

The card layers are Bermuda Bay, Night of Navy and Sahara Sand.

I was inspired by Jessica's layering, use of the Tailored Tag but mostly by the way she coloured in Designer Series Paper to create her card fronts.

Those who have been following my blog for a while will know that I'm a great fan of the work of Piet Mondrian which has inspired several of my cards.  As soon as I saw this pattern in the gorgeous Graceful Glass Designer Vellum pack, I just knew that I'd be creating some more Mondrian-esque cards with it!

I coloured this first card with Stampin' Blends alcohol markers.  I really like the way they dry so well and quite quickly on the vellum and any mistakes were really easy to correct.  The only drawback was the lack of a black marker.  I used the Dark Smoky Slate and it makes a very pleasing pattern but a real Modrian look requires primary colours and black!

The greeting is from the coordinating Painted Glass stamp set which I cut out with the Tailored Tag punch.  The black edging is created with a black Stampin' Write Marker and a ruler.  Use this method with any of the Stampin' Write Markers that match the cardstock or ink in your project - one of the many benefits of the Stampin' Up coordinating colours!

Craving that black, I decided to make another version using Stampin' Write Markers.  The only drawbacks were that the ink took a long time to dry and any mistakes or "bleeding" could not be corrected.

Graceful Glass goes Modrian version 2!  This one is coloured with Stampin' Write Markers

The cardstock layers are Real Red, Whisper White and Basic Black.

TIP:  For a deeper, bolder colour tone - colour both sides of the vellum.

TIP:  Adhering the coloured vellum to a similar sized piece of Whisper White cardstock will show off the true colours. Areas left uncoloured will appear white.

Strength of colour will vary depending on how you apply it to the vellum. 
For strong tones, colour both the back and the front of the vellum.

The little test piece above was coloured with Stampin' Write Markers but similar results were obtained using Stampin' Blends alcohol markers.

Having satiated my inner Modrian, I turned to this gorgeous flowy, wavy design in the pack and coloured it with Stampin' Blends.  The greeting is stamped with Blueberry Bushel ink and I added some Faceted Dots.  The card layers are Bermuda Bay, Whisper White and Blueberry Bushel.

Waste not, want not - an off cut of coloured vellum makes a good decoration for the inside of the card!

I decorated the inside of the card with an offcut of the coloured vellum.

Ink it! Stamp it! Design Team Blog Hop : Technique - Easel Card

Welcome to the Ink It! Stamp It! Design Team Blog Hop - we hop every month so be sure to pop back and visit us again!  Today our theme is Technique and I've made an easel card using the gorgeous new Graceful Glass Vellum that will be available in the new Annual Catalogue from 1 June.

A stained glass window achieved with an easel card and the Graceful Glass Vellum

I used Stampin' Blends alcohol markers to add some colour to the front of the printed vellum and them made some frames from Poppy Parade cardstock.  Poppy Parade is a returning colour in the new Annual Catalogue.  Real Red would work really well too.

I made the base easel from a 12" square piece of Basic Black card and have included the dimensions below.

I added layers of Poppy Parade and Sahara Sand cardstock to the easel and then added my framed pieces of vellum.  From the photos you'll see that I adhered both to the lower section of the front of the card so that the top frame stands proud when the easel is propped into position.

The inside of the easel card is quite clean and simple

Inside the card I adhered a decorative strip with Stampin' Dimensionals and above that I adhered a piece of Whisper White cardstock for writing a greeting.   I didn't want the white to show when the card was propped open on it's easel.

I cut the piece of vellum larger than the Whisper White strip underneath it, folded it over the white strip and taped it at the back so that no adhesive would show through the vellum.  I then adhered that strip to a slightly larger piece of Poppy Parade and added a couple of Faceted Dots that will also be available from 1 June.

The finished size of this easel card is 7" x 6"

I stamped the greeting from the matching Painted Glass stamp set onto a piece of Sahara Sand and layered it onto a piece of Basic Black card.

DIMENSIONS:
Easel card:  Cut to 12" x 7".  Score and fold long side at 6" and 9"  

Layers:  Cut 2 each  Red 2 3/4" x 6 3/4"
                                  Sahara Sand  2 1/2' x 61/2"

Vellum: Top piece           3" x 6"
             Lower piece       1 3/4" x 6"

Frames: (Cut out the middles of the pieces, leaving 1/4" frames)
Top Frame (red)              3 1/4" x 6 1/8"     - Adhere only the lower edge to the card
Lower Frame (red)          1 7/8" x 6 1/8"     - Adhere all edges to the card
